Weight Loss Surgery — Is it Right for You?

Weight loss surgery has definitely hit the mainstream.  Every day on TV, you see commercials for one procedure or another.  From lap band to gastric bypass and more, it’s become far more accepted.

But is weight loss surgery right for you?

Do You Qualify for Bariatric Surgery?

Before you can start thinking about a,particular bariatric (weight loss) surgery, you need to know if you even qualify.  While exceptions to occur, in general the rules are:

  • Be 100 or more pounds overweight; exceptions can be made if another condition (like diabetes) will be substantially helped.
  • Be in good health otherwise; in other words, able to withstand the rigors of the surgery and general anesthesia.
  • Have tried, and documented, many weight loss efforts but have failed.  Just saying you tried the Rotation Diet or some such thing won’t cut it.  You’ll need some sort of proof like Weight Watchers, NutriSystem, Jennie Craig or a medical program.
  • Be motivated to change your life, for the better.

Does this sound like you?

Weight Loss Surgery — No Magic Bullet

Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet for shedding the pounds.  Indeed, you will have to carefully watch your diet for the rest of your life.

Too many people think that such a surgery will let them continue to eat what got them into trouble, just maybe in smaller amounts.  Sorry, that’s not the case.

If you can’t stay on a diet for a few weeks, you’ll not be able to stay on one for the rest of your life.

Why, Then, Have Surgery?

Because if you are motivated to change, bariatric surgery can help you shed the pounds, and shed them fast.  Not only are you eating fewer calories, your body isn’t able to absorb the calories you do eat.  So the weight loss is thrown into high gear.

Types of Weight Loss Surgeries

There are 4 main types of weight loss surgeries available.  They range from lap band (least invasive) to vertical sleeve gastrectomy.  And in between there are gastric bypass and duodenal switch.

Here’s where you can find additional information on each one of these weight loss surgeries.

Is weight loss surgery right for you?  It just might be, if you’re honestly looking to change your life habits in the process.  But if you’re not willing to commit to a new eating plan for the rest of your life…you may want to rethink having bariatric surgery.
