As an ICU RN, the number one precursor I see for strokes, vascular diseases, heart attacks, poor kidney function and many other illnesses is Diabetes. Our children are getting fatter and fatter and have a life expectancy that is shorter than their grandparents and parents. WHY? Because we have never understood the effect simple carbohydrates have on our bodies.

Diabetic education has previously focused on simple sugars only, not addressing simple carbohydrates and the effect they have on your blood sugar. This book explains why it is just as important to look at white rice, white potatoes, white bread, and white flour products as sugars! It is about time!

You don’t need to be a diabetic to get a great deal of useful information from this book, in fact, I highly recommend it to anyone who is overweight or has a parent with adult onset diabetes, or has a child who is overweight. You will learn why you have that afternoon drop in energy, why the weight is not coming off even though you have decreased your calorie intact, why a plain baked potato raises your blood sugar, and what you can do to prevent your cells from becoming resistant to insulin, or to decrease that resistance if you already have it.

As others have stated, this is written in easy to understand language. It offers a lifestyle for good health, not a diet to follow till you lose a few pounds. If you are diabetic and don’t have this information, you are cheating yourself of better health. If you are not diabetic and never want to be, this book has your answers. If your child is overweight, learn how to help them become healthier and more energetic while still eating great tasting food by making some healthier choices.

After a long, up and down battle with weight and food, I ballooned to a dangerous size that threatened my health. At 32, I was confused. I knew that it was harder to drop weight as one ages, but I wasn’t that old. Worse still, I was hungry constantly. How could I lose weight if I literally couldn’t stop thinking about food? I had forgotten what true hunger felt like.

Then I purchased The Sugar Solution. The first thing the book did was scare the crap out of me. I didn’t realize how my eating habits literally endangered me. About 50 pages in, I began to realize that sugar was possibly keeping me from losing weight. It was affecting me on a cellular level, urging my cells to retain unneeded fat. It was also putting my arteries in severe risk of damage due to high blood pressure and unchecked sugar levels.

I began checking sugar content before I ate anything and was surprised to find how much sugar seemingly “safe” foods contained. Soon, I began to drop some weight. Amazingly, I found myself putting food away 3/4 into a meal. I began eating when I was actually hungry. A month and a half after reading the book, I am 25 pounds lighter and generally calmer. I don’t suffer mood swings anymore–another symptom of blood sugar spikes.

My beef with this book is in the tone. The book was put together from pieces of magazine content, and it feels like it. Titles are consistently alliterate and tacky. Exclamation points should be used sparingly (or so I thought). After a few hundred pages of this, I began to get irritated, as the book felt less scientific and more corny.

Overall, I would absolutely suggest this book to people on the road to diabetes or people simply concerned about their health. For me, the culprit is sugar. If I can control my sugar, I can control my eating. Get healthy before it’s too late.

    UPDATE

Forty-five pounds shed and counting. I can’t say things would have gone this smoothly if not for this book.

What a great book! I’ve been a diabetic for 2 years and this book explained how my body processes sugar better than my doctor did. It really changed the way I buy and prepare my food. I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who is diabetic or has a family history of diabetis, or even anyone who wants to lose weight. It’s extremely educational. The nice surprise is what you can eat.

This is an excellent book for those who are having energy problems and not losing weight. I am not a classic binge eater, but I did not have the energy to do almost anything. I have weight to lose and nothing I was doing was working. I am a couple weeks into this book and I am feeling better already. My body-type swelling has gone down, I actually am getting up and doing things, etc. I have lose 4 lbs so far. I haven’t lost weight in 4 years! This is a solution that is working for me. Although I am not a fan of the alternate sugars out there, I am using Stevia.

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I’ve always had – shaky, irritable – as low blood sugar. I’ve totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I’m losing weight without being hungry. I’m sending my copy to a friend, and I’ve been telling a lot of people about it.

I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That’s the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars. You’ll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It’s not breathtaking, but it’s full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I’m able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.

Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn’t ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There’s no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.

By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach’s we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.

We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.

The Sugar Solution reminds us that by taking care of ourselves each day we not only reduce the risk of countless life threatening diseases but we also increase our energy levels and abilities to cope with day to day stress. More importantly though, this book unravels the mysteries of carbohydrates and provides nutritional, exercise, and stress relief programs that fit into the average person’s busy life.

Loved this book. Helped me to understand the food/body relationship. We dont understand that the way we feel is directly related to what we put in our mouths. Very easy to read and keep on hand for reference.

Subtitled: Your symptoms are real–and your solution is here.

Weight gain? Memory lapse? Mood swings? Fatigue? If your answers are yes, yes, yes and yes–this book is for you.

High blood sugar (insulin and overweight issues) can and do cause all kinds of problems:

    _ Type II diabetes

    _ Heart disease and stroke

    _ Cancer

    _ Depression

    _ Weight gain

    _ Infertility and birth defects

    _ Cancer

    _ Vision problems and blindness

    _ Nerve damage and amputation

    _ Dementia and Alzheimer disease

The book also contains the Glycemic Index for optimal blood sugar control.

The wisdom in The Sugar Solution is easy to understand and put into everyday use. If more of us understood the importance of controlling our blood sugar–and that of our children and grandchildren, just think about how many health problems we could possibly eliminate.

The book is broken into eight parts and covers what we need to know–must know–to be a healthier person, family and country.

We are a combination of our heritage, lifestyle, food/liquid intake and stress level. This book can be your owner’s manual.

Remember, blood sugar is not bad. It is your body’s best friend: fuel for muscles and brain cell and gives you energy. The “bad” happens when we allow our blood sugar to get out of control.

If you have never read anything about blood sugar and insulin before, this is very important information that often our doctors don’t have the time for explain.

Prevention Books provide trust-worthy information that empowers people to make intelligent decisions about their health so that you can live a longer, more vital life.

Sugar cravings, salt cravings? Give in, in moderation and satisfy the craving. The weight-loss strategies for eating at home and in restaurants will be helpful as well.

Armchair Interviews says: If you want to be more mentally aware, lose weight and have increased energy, read and follow The Sugar Solutions.

There are many books as well as theories on high blood sugar and diabetes; however, I have yet to find one that gives as detailed and concise information as “The Sugar Solution.” Even though full of information, this book is very reader friendly, not using medical terms that a layperson cannot understand. It was a real pleasure for me to find all the needed information in one book. I have insulin resistance and thought I understood much of what was going on. Not. After reading “The Sugar Solution” I feel so much more informed than what my doctor was able to relay to me.

Insulin resistance is a precursor to Type II Diabetes and unless looked after it will create health issues. The editors detail the importance of creating a balance within the body and give easy to follow examples of food intake to maintain sugar balance as well as maintain desirable weight. Overweight issues often accompany insulin resistance.

Blood sugar problems can cause other major illnesses within the body besides diabetes. The editors cover metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, pregnancy diabetes, as well as childhood diabetes.

The editors of “The Sugar Solution” detail weight-loss strategies, making healthy choices when eating out at restaurants, indulging in sweets and adding supplements to the eating plan. Of course, as with any maintenance plan exercise is of utmost importance. The editors present a 10 minute a day strength training regime that anyone can endure. They even present a 28-day lifestyle makeover that is easy to follow. Better yet, they even add over 60 recipes that are interesting, easy to make, and of course healthy.

“The Sugar Solution” is a book to keep as a reference and a book to read for information. Most people don’t realize they consume 5 pounds of sugar within a month, sweeteners have more than 50 names, and, half of Americans have insulin resistance. Reading this book the reader will not only learn how to prevent onset of diabetes, but will learn how to effectively maintain a balanced body if already diagnosed with a blood sugar related syndrome.

The approach proposed in “The Sugar Solution”, by the editors of Prevention Magazine is comprehensive while not overwhelming the reader, taking you through a strategy that depends on better eating habits, an exercise routine and techniques to reduce stress.

The book brings the reader on board by proposing solutions that are manageable. For foods, they rely heavily on the Glycemic Index as the way to weigh meals as more or less appropriate to control your blood sugars. For exercising, they propose a scheme that doesn’t mean you need to live in the gym, suggesing exercises that fit any lifestyle. And for stress, the same happens, and they offer advice that can be incorporated even in the most hectic work days.

All three components dealt with in the book have been proven to affect blood sugar values, ultimately leading to complications including but not limited to diabetes. So, in offering the Sugar Solution, the book deals a strong blow to the fundamental causes underlying America’s current diabetes epidemic.
