Have You Got Drunkorexia?
What is drunkorexia? How do you know you have it? Is it good or bad to have it?
Drunkorexia is a new term, and it describes someone who regularly cuts calories all day so they can go out at night and drink and party. From what I’ve seen so far, it started as a "Hollywood thing" and has spread to women of all ages in all places.
Don’t get me wrong — saving calories during the day because you have an evening out planned isn’t evil in itself. If you just do it every once in awhile (like once or maybe twice a month), it shouldn’t harm most women (assuming you don’t have a problem with alcohol in general).
But if you regularly substitute the calories from alcohol for the calories from a healthy diet, you are risking your health and maybe your life doing so.
I saw a quote that I think describes it well: "There are women who are afraid to put a grape in their mouth but have no problem drinking a beer." (You can read the whole article from the NY Times here.)
Do you have drunkorexia? How often do you save your calories in order to splurge on drinking? How well do you eat if you don’t plan on drinking that day — is it still abysmal?
Eating an olive from a martini does not constitute a serving of green vegetables for the day.
I know that one post in one blog (this one) likely won’t stop anyone from substituting alcohol for healthy food. But if this sounds like someone you know, maybe you should talk with them. Show them an article or two. Show them you care.
