Shake Your Smoothie — Weight Loss Shakes, Then and Now

If you’re old enough, do you remember the weight loss shakes of the 60′s and 70′s?  I think "Alba" was one of them.  Powdered stuff, mixed with water and tasted like chalk.  Although a little better if it was really really cold and served with ice cubes.

Then there was the 80′s and 90′s with SlimFast.  Better in taste, for sure, although not fantastic (I’d never convince myself I was downing a chocolate milkshake).  Still, the "weight loss shake" was moving in the right direction.

These days, the shakes of choice are the smoothies.  Now these I can get into!  For the most part fruit smoothies are my choice, rather than chocolate or vanilla.  Here’s my very favorite recipe:

Strawberry Banana Weight Loss Smoothie

1 cup cold water
roughly 6 large frozen strawberries
1/2 banana, frozen
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I like OnWhey)

Stick it all in a blender and give it a spin.  I like it nice and thick, so I may add another strawberry or two if needed.  By using the frozen fruit, you don’t need to add ice cubes and dilute the flavor.  The calories are roughly 230, and it makes a great meal.
